I have always been a mother well not always for over 30 years. I have raised siblings, my own children and foster children, I know what unconditional love is. During all these years we have had pets, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles you name it we most likely have had it in our home.
I was always the mom that made sure her kids understood the responsibility of a pet. Not just feeding, walking
and cleaning up after but the bigger responsibilities such as shots, spay and neuter and health care for your animal.
When the kids left home so did the animals. Life was pretty free and simple without children or pets in our home, we could feed the fish ever day or so, if we were going to be gone we could buy a weekly feeder block and hit the road. Then one day Max, a beautiful Black Lab puppy found us. He was in a box, sitting outside a sportsman store with a breeder, Max was for sale along with his siblings.
We always stop and look at Lab puppies we love to see them, play with them and have always up until that day in January never thought twice about not buying one. On this day in January something changed. Max came to the side of the box and every time my husband played with another puppy max would climb the side of the box and whine at my husband. It was finally Max's turn and the chemistry was undeniable. He was coming home with us.
Max has already had an interesting life, at 14 weeks old he ate 10 lbs of dog food and spent the night at the puppy hospital for fear he would rupture his pool little tummy. Max has learned to swim, protect me and somehow knows when Friday rolls around and waits loyally for my husband to come into the driveway for the weekend.
Max is a friend, a protector and more than a pet. I know I am sounding like an old woman, my kids say I love him more than I do them. I often tease back, that he will not grow up and move away, if he gets some girl pregnant we can sell the puppies and he does not talk back, what is not to love.
Max and I have had a terrible week, we have learned a lot about loyalty, sickness and unconditional love. Read What Vets Do Not Tell You to learn more about protecting your best friend.
UPDATE
First Thank you for all your thoughts - today is Wednesday and Max is home after 5 days in the puppy hospital - he is by no means better, but on the way to recovery. Guess it will give me more time to spend on ActiveRain as we nurse him back to full health.
