Looking To Cool Down?

Spring is ending and here in Central Oregon we are getting a taste of summer. Today it was 85 degrees in La Pine, which is located at the base of the Cascade Mountains. I had clients in town today that had never been to Central Oregon and are moving here because of a job transfer.

After finding our top picks of Central Oregon Real Estate we were all ready for some sight seeing. I needed photos for my website and of course I love to share them with all of you on ActiveRain. My clients came along for the ride, over the next couple days I will post articles about each location we visited. This one was their favorite - remember I said it was 85 degrees? I promise you this photo was taken 14 miles from my house and the temperature was 70 degrees.

Welcome Back Little Brother - Thank You For Serving!

Tonight is an exciting time in our family - it has been 9 days since we heard whether or not my little brother Daniel James Egbert, Jr. was dead or alive. He called at 2 a.m. on the morning of the 11th to say he was being moved to another base. He would call or email when he had service and let us know what to expect next. Some of you may remember my post Thank You Little Brother.

My sister-in-law has had a rough week - no word on the where abouts of her husand, their 5 year old daughter broker her arm, they had to put their puppies down because of Parvo, the car broke down and all this time she is suppose to keep her sanity. She is an amazing woman.

Today she received the call, he is ok, not only is he ok but he is running across an airport runway somewhere in the U.S.A. he will call when he lands.

We will not see him for 3 or 4 weeks as he has schooling to attend from the promotion he received while in Afghanistan, and then he has debriefing. But he is alive and well and we are so thankful to know this we can wait.

Today I am thankful that my brother who is like my son is on our soil once again, but it makes me think of all the other families that are still waiting. To each of them I send my thanks, my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for supporting our troops no matter how you feel about where we are as a Country, these fine young people deserve our thanks, our prayers and our gifts.

I guess I will have to find a new solider to send care packages to. I have sent Danny a package every month for over a year, any of us have a solider that could use some goodies?

Max | UPDATED

I have always been a mother well not always for over 30 years. I have raised siblings, my own children and foster children, I know what unconditional love is. During all these years we have had pets, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles you name it we most likely have had it in our home.

I was always the mom that made sure her kids understood the responsibility of a pet. Not just feeding, walking black laband cleaning up after but the bigger responsibilities such as shots, spay and neuter and health care for your animal.

When the kids left home so did the animals. Life was pretty free and simple without children or pets in our home, we could feed the fish ever day or so, if we were going to be gone we could buy a weekly feeder block and hit the road. Then one day Max, a beautiful Black Lab puppy found us. He was in a box, sitting outside a sportsman store with a breeder, Max was for sale along with his siblings.

We always stop and look at Lab puppies we love to see them, play with them and have always up until that day in January never thought twice about not buying one. On this day in January something changed. Max came to the side of the box and every time my husband played with another puppy max would climb the side of the box and whine at my husband. It was finally Max's turn and the chemistry was undeniable. He was coming home with us.

Max has already had an interesting life, at 14 weeks old he ate 10 lbs of dog food and spent the night at the puppy hospital for fear he would rupture his pool little tummy. Max has learned to swim, protect me and somehow knows when Friday rolls around and waits loyally for my husband to come into the driveway for the weekend.

Max is a friend, a protector and more than a pet. I know I am sounding like an old woman, my kids say I love him more than I do them. I often tease back, that he will not grow up and move away, if he gets some girl pregnant we can sell the puppies and he does not talk back, what is not to love.

Max and I have had a terrible week, we have learned a lot about loyalty, sickness and unconditional love. Read What Vets Do Not Tell You to learn more about protecting your best friend.

UPDATE

First Thank you for all your thoughts - today is Wednesday and Max is home after 5 days in the puppy hospital - he is by no means better, but on the way to recovery. Guess it will give me more time to spend on ActiveRain as we nurse him back to full health.

What Vets Do Not Tell You

My pets have always had their recommended shots, been spayed and neutered imagine my surprise when Max, my Black Lab was exposed to Parvovirus and actually contracted this horrible virus.

Max has had all of his shots according to some vets. However, after finding out that Max is sick and in the Max prior to Parvohospital for the second time in the short time he has been alive I wanted to know how and why. Most vets recommend that puppies be vaccinated for Parvo every 4 to 6 weeks until they are about 20 weeks, then to be on the safe side they should be given a yearly booster.

Max had 3 Parvo shots and is right at 20 weeks, he go his first at 6 weeks his second at 14 weeks and his third at 22 weeks and he still got sick. Why? The answer was pretty simple, the vet I had chosen for Max was not aggressive, they felt he was protected, and it was not enough. Max made a friend with another puppy who days later almost died from this virus. At the first sign of illness I had Max at the vet's office for a test and although the result was weak it was a positive. On Friday Max was admitted to the hospital and put on an IV fluids with antibiotics. Today is Sunday and we hope he can come home on Monday but it appears it could be Tuesday or Wednesday before he will be well enough to come home.

Now, for the kicker - most vet's do not tell you what needs to be done to your home and property to prepare for your weakened animal to return home or protect other puppies from being exposed. The only thing that is proven to kill the virus is bleach. Every place the dog has been needs to be bleached. Your yard, your floors, the dogs bedding, the carpet the furniture if your pets get on the furniture and even if they do not do so when you are home - do you know what they do in your absence?

Now obviously, bleaching your carpet is not an option, or a lot of your furnishings, so what are you to do? I called a couple professional cleaning companies such as Service Master, I called PetCo and PetSmart they all recommended that I shampoo the carpets with a system that heats the water to 240 degrees. So, since Friday I have stripped my house, washed and ruined a lot of belongings, I have shampooed all the carpets, mopped all my floors with bleach. I have cleaned the acre we live on, washed the deck, sprayed the entire acre with bleach. I do not know that I have done enough, but I have done what I can to keep others from getting sick or Max from being re-exposed.

Parvovirus comes in several strains, we only have a vaccination for the most prevelant strain of the virus. There are several links in this article that will take you to other pages about this deadly and horrifying virus. Please educate yourself and do what you can to protect your puppy and other puppies.

Disclosure is NOT Always the Same - What Are You Required to Disclose?

What is necessary to disclose in your market? I read Mary Pope-Handy's blog Haunted Moss Beach Distillery - UPDATED - For Sale! While reading through this I thought of a lot of great ghost stories I have heard over the years. I grew up part time in Palos Verdes, California and we use to go to the old Torrance Pier (behind the "monk mission" now that I am older I realize it is a monastery) and Vandevert Castle, the Glass Church, and a movie theater where the employees were shot to death and they supposedly haunted the theater, there are great stories about all these locations.

What caught my attention and made me think wow was not the haunted real estate, it was the comment that you have to disclose if a property is haunted in California. It made me wonder what we all have disclose and what we don't.

One of the things that I was a little surprised about California requiring that you disclose a property being haunted is that some people think their ghosts follow them. My daughter swears that my Grandmother follows her where ever she goes and rubs her head until she falls asleep.

In Oregon we do not have to disclose the following - leave comments and let us know what you have to disclose.

If the seller has A.I.D.S.

If there was a death in the home including suicide

If the property is haunted

If the Property was a crime scene including a murder scene

If a property was lived in by a sex offender

If there is a sex offender in the neighborhood

There are many more but the basic rule of thumb is if it is not a material fact to the property it is not to be disclosed.

What Did Your Town Look Like On The Penny Postcard?

I remember finding postcards in my grandparent's boxes of photos, tins and albums. Some of them were actually from when their parents were young. The penny postcard is long gone but the memory still lives on. A penny post card did not cost a penny it was a penny to mail it.

This website http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/special/ppcs/ppcs.html will take you to some of them - these cards are of landmarks and towns throughout America - you can check out what your town looked like in the days of the penny postcard.

Have a great time looking - I sure enjoyed the fact that Peterson Rock Garden was featured for my area.

Everything is better with Chocolate | Goody's, Sunriver, Bend Oregon and Boise ID

When we receive our commission checks we also receive a wonderful treat of "Goody's" Chocolate. Goody's is a local company that is more than meets the eye. They not only sell some of the very best chocolate around they make it. Sunriver Oregon Goodys

Stepping into Goody's is like stepping back in time. My grandparents had a soda fountain called "The Melody Bar" long before I was born. I have seen many photos of this magical place over the years and always dreamed of working at one as a kid. Grandpa and Grandpa closed The Melody Bar when Grandpa was shipped off to war.

The mystery of the soda fountain seems to have disappeared but not in Central Oregon and now Boise, ID. Goody's is a family run company that makes some wonderful candy but they also make their own ice cream. Candy can be purchased by the piece or by the pound and even some of our old time favorites can be found there like cherry balls.

All the chocolate is made preservative free in Bend, Oregon. Goody's was first created by Marion Palmateer in Sunriver, OR. With handmade candy and premium ice cream they very quickly became legendary.

The old fashion ice cream shop in the middle of current times is a treat that everyone should experience. The real hot fudge, the smooth ice cream and sorbet is out of this world. Watching the staff create some of these master pieces is an experience of its own.

goodys chocolate sunriverSoda fountains are a dying breed they reached the height of their popularity in the 1950's, when they were the center of a teenager's social existence. Today, they are increasingly hard to find.

When you walk into any of the Goody's you can smell the sweetness of the goodies that are waiting to cure your craving.

I need a vacation from my vacation!!!!

I am sitting here in the Portland Airport waiting for the last leg of my trip home and realize just how nice it is to be back in my beautiful home state of Oregon.

A recap of my last 9 days makes my head spin.

My niece placed first in her region for tumbling - whoo hoo

My niece placed second on Double Mini for her region - whoo hoo

My sister and I had 4 nights together - without husbands - our bar bill averaged $125 a night - ouch

I met a cousin I had never met

I found out that my grandmother should have been a very wealthy woman and that now my sisters and maybe heirs to one of the big household names - wow that blows my mind

I found out that my father never pursued his Indian rights or the family "business" and we can still do so.

I watched a thunderstorm or two in Texas - Wow

I organized another sister's kitchen

I cooked Lasagna, coconut cream pie, parmesan chicken on different nights

I learned a new dish called chicken spaghetti that is to die for

I caught a few croppy and had a fish fry - we had real hushpuppies, cat fish and croppy - that was pretty darn good.

Took my sisters puppy fishing for her first time.

I know I am missing a few things - but I am sure you can see why I need a vacation from my vacation

fishing in Texas
